Step 1 of 3: Equipment
A single-story brick ranch house with a low shingled roof and curtained windows, fronted by a mown lawn and an asphalt driveway, with sun flare in the foreground and leafy trees behind.

The compressor in a mini-split earns its wear through a long cooling push every year. Homes in Lafayette County, AR run cooling about five months a year, from May through September. By the time a unit stops cooling in August, the compressor has been starting and stopping daily since May, the condenser fan has been pulling hot outdoor air across the coil for months, and the contactor has been switching under load the whole time. A contractor coming out to a failed unit checks those parts first, because they carry the season's full hours. Refrigerant charge and compressor capacity tell the real story of how the system held up.

Older refrigerant lines and wiring routes get adapted when equipment changes, and what a contractor opens on a repair visit reflects that layered history. Half the homes in Lafayette County, Arkansas were built in 1978 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A compressor or control board that fails in stock of this vintage may draw a part from a line that manufacturers have since discontinued or redesigned, which changes both what the contractor orders and how long the repair takes. The age of the house alone does not answer that question; the opened system does.

The Parts of a Mini-split a Contractor Checks First

Isometric illustration of a cutaway house showing two wall-mounted indoor air conditioning units connected by a line to an outdoor condenser unit beside the building, with a sofa and bed inside.

The indoor air handler mounts high on a wall inside the room and is where most visible problems show up first: a frozen coil, a clogged drain line, or a fan that runs but moves little air. The outdoor condenser unit sits on a pad or bracket outside and houses the compressor, which is the component contractors go to when the system runs but produces no meaningful temperature change.

A refrigerant line set runs through a small hole in the wall and connects the two units, carrying the refrigerant between them. A condensate drain line runs from the indoor unit to the outside, and a control board inside the air handler manages signals from the remote and coordinates the whole system. Both are common sources of faults.
